My six year old Dachshund chewed xylitol gum?

He chewed two pieces of it then promptly spit them out. It happened before I knew the dangers of this product. He didn't ingest them, but like I said he was chewing them. He seems fine now but I don't want to take any chances...should I take him to the vet even though no ingestion occured?
