How did Mahatma Gandhi help the untouchables?

although he was a member of the merchant cles which was sort of medium caste, but still quite high, he did not think the caste system was right and in fact took a child of the untouchables into his home. he was inated i think in about 1947 by a member of the brahman caste but till that point led India's search for equality, his ideas instigated a law which was ped in 1949 which made it illegal to make someone untouchable
